Stones

The fossils in the steps and columns of Bodley's 'Old Church' are crinoids (sea lilies) in grey Derbyshire limestone. They were deposited over 300 million years ago.

The fossils in the high altar (Temple Moore 1914) are a limestone known as Sussex Marble, Petworth Marble or Winklestone.  It is local to Sussex and has been used for church fonts since Saxon times.

The stone carvings are by Tom Nichols of Burges' practice, as were the tops of the columns, one of which shows two sisters being rescued during the Indian Mutiny. Another shows the music notation of the hymn "The Church's one Foundation" and the foundation stone lies beneath!

The marble and onyx of the sanctuary are the work of Romaine Walker.
