Fr. ROBERT FAYERS
We congratulate Fr Robert on his appointment as a Canon of Chichester Cathedral and Prebendary of Gates and he is to be installed as such at Chichester Cathedral during Evensong on Saturday, 11 February at 5-30pm. It might be of interest to know that ‘Gates’ is believed to derive from Eastergate and Westergate, two villages close to Chichester. The Prebend received income from land once held after the Norman Conquest by the Abbot of Seez in Normandy. The office dates at least to the first half of the 14th century but possibly a century earlier. The last Vicar of Saint Michael's to be made a Canon was Canon Scott in 1949, so it is a great honour to once again have the work of our Parish priest recognised in this way. If you wish to attend Evensong at the Cathedral at 5.30pm on Saturday 11 February you are most welcome. A coach (return fare £12) will leave the church at 1 pm , returning about 7.30 pm.

We welcomed a fresh ordinand at Saint Michael's in November. Andy is training part- time on a non- residential course at The S E Institute of Theological Education and we look forward to seeing him over the next 3 years. UNITED BENEFICE
From the 1 December the Benefices of Saint Michael’s and Saint Paul’s were joined. Whereas each parish will remain separate and distinct, with its own churchwardens and PCC., Father Robert Fayers becomes the first Vicar of the new Benefice and Father Mark Lyon the first stipendiary Assistant Curate. The Vicarage of the new Benefice becomes that of the present Saint Michael’s while Saint Paul’s Vicarage returns to the Diocese, and so the former will henceforth simply be known as ‘The Vicarage.’ The Patrons of the United Benefice will be the Society for the Maintenance of the Faith, as became the case for Saint Michael’s a couple of years ago. The title of the new Benefice is: Brighton Saint Michael and All Angels and Saint Paul. Although each parish remains distinct it is hoped the uniting will lead to even more working together and to members of the two congregations getting to know each other better.
